 What is an Opportunity Class (OC)?

The Opportunity Class at Tighes Hill Public School is for students in Years 5 & 6 who have been identified as academically gifted.

Our program provides a range of opportunities for gifted learners in an environment where students are encouraged to develop critical thinking skills and creativity. The benefits to students include having access to stimulating and differentiated learning and interaction with like-minded students with similar abilities.

Our aim is to maximise the educational outcomes for all students. Central to this aim is:

  • The provision of a challenging academic curriculum and stimulating experiences which encourage individuals to achieve their full potential and satisfy their learning needs and goals.
  • The fostering and encouragement of positive self esteem, resilience and the confidence needed to take risks and become independent in the teaching and learning environment.

The OBJECTIVES of the program are to :

  • Provide an environment which encourages divergent and creative thinking skills;
  • Foster attitudes which challenge students to become lifelong learners who value and contribute to educational, environmental and humanitarian roles and responsibilities;
  • Develop higher levels of literacy, numeracy and technological awareness;
  • Develop research skills and methods to encourage understanding of methods of inquiry;
  • To develop self understanding to enable students to appreciate their strengths and acknowledge their weaknesses; and
  • To provide varied educational opportunities

OC Placement

Students who would like to enrol in the OC sit for the OC Placement test.

Successful applicants will be notified later in the year by the Selective Schools Unit.

Once your child has been offered a place in the OC we encourage you to make contact with us. An orientation night for families is held early in Term 4. Students will also be invited for 2 transition days towards the end of Term 4 to sample some of the exciting activities and programs the OC has to offer.
