Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Join in at home and read your child a bedtime story. Studies show that reading a bedtime story six days a week can give kids almost a year’s head start when they begin school. Reading has also been shown to develop empathy, promote critical thinking and help children find a sense of self.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Students learnt about and discussed the skills, qualities and values of being a leader; listened to a talk from our current school captains, Ember and Oscar about their experience as school leaders and also spoke with Mr Selwood about the roles and responsibilities of leadership. It was great to see so many amazing students put themselves forward and share their applications for a leadership position. After our session last week, all Year 5 students took part in a peer vote for their top 3 male and female leaders.

Congratulations to Joey, Hamish, Jules, Keita, Evie and Georgie! Next Thursday 30th November beginning at 9.20am, these students will present their captaincy speeches to K-5 ready for a whole school vote. Parents and family are very welcome to attend this event. Tell Them From Me Parent Survey

This term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents' and carers' perspectives on their child's experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online at home or on public computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey is now open and can be completed until 13^th October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, however, your responses are very much appreciated.

Tighes Hill PS has had a visit from the Skyworks Planetarium this week. We have learnt all about the celestial objects in the sky that we can see, including stars, the Sun, the moon, other planets. We looked at different constellations and how to locate them among the other stars. It was a fantastic experience and Geoff from Skyworks has been incredibly impressed with the knowledge and enthusiasm that our Tighes Hill students have displayed.

Walk A Mile Koori Style

Well done to our Year 6 boys who attended the Walk A Mile Koori Style event today in order to raise awareness about violence. After their walk, the boys and men read out a pledge, then carried dresses representing victims of violence to a display at King Edward Park. We are so proud of the respect that our boys showed today. Afterwards, we enjoyed a sausage sizzle lunch, entertainment, and activities.

Our dancers have been rehearsing each week with Mrs Bowman and Mrs Elsley on a performance to honour the late David Bowie, to his classic song 'Let's Dance'. Our dancers will be performing at the festival on Tuesday, the 26th of July, at Wests Newcastle. They will also be performing later this term at the Hall of Fame - Responsibility assembly. Students participated in a variety of cultural activities, promoting the Harmony Day themes of 'our diversity is our strength' and 'everyone belongs'. Thank you to everyone for making Harmony Day 2016 a fantastic celebration! It was wonderful to see so many students dressed in orange and their traditional dress. A very special thank you to local artist and parent volunteer, Jane Lander, who helped students create the beautiful Mandala installation. Thank you to Kristy and our wonderful canteen staff who went above and beyond to provide some delicious meals for our shared lunch. Sarah not only has been an extremely valued member of her own team but has also mentored our junior teams throughout their competitions. Sarah has been highlighted by numerous schools throughout the competition as a talented debater and was selected to attend a special try-out for the regional team. Hunter Dance Festival - Laboratory Lunacy!

Our 3/4 Dance Group, Laboratory Lunacy, performed their spooky dance to a remix version of The Monster Mash at this year's Hunter Dance Festival Competition. The dance tells the story of a group of Mad Scientists who perform experiments on different creatures, Werewolves, Frankenstein Zombies, and Mummies, with disastrous results! We are incredibly proud of our dancers. They performed brilliantly and creeped everyone out with their ghoulish costumes and makeup! It was a fantastic evening and we all had such a wonderful time. Laboratory Lunacy will be performing at our special Education Week Assembly next Thursday. Thank you to our wonderful parent helpers for all their support.

K-2 Australian Reptile Park Excursion

Last Friday, our K-2 students visited the Australian Reptile Park. It was the largest group of students that Tighes Hill PS has ever taken to the Reptile Park! We had such a busy day. From the moment we stepped off the buses, we were non-stop. We were lucky enough to see some amazing animals up close during the animal show. We were greeted by a koala, a tawny frogmouth, a bearded dragon, a blue-tongue lizard, a baby crocodile, and a small snake, followed by a "baby" Burmese Python named Fluffy, which Mrs Bowman got to hold and carry around the show pit. During our tour of the Reptile Park, we came across turtles, lizards, alligators, koalas sleeping in their tree, a goanna, lace monitors, Elvis the crocodile, and a beautiful Galápagos tortoise. We were even lucky enough to see the Galápagos tortoise being fed by one of the keepers.

Thank you to our wonderful staff and amazing parent helpers who came along and shared in the fun with us. It was a fantastic day and the children should be so proud of their beautiful behaviour on the day. As fun as being a snake charmer was, Mrs Bowman is going to stick to teaching.

Gavin Morris Weather Visit

Last week our Stage 3 students were fortunate enough to receive a visit from NBN's weatherman, Gavin Morris. Gavin taught us about all things weather related including how to interpret a synoptic chart and we watched a great time-lapse video of a weather satellite orbiting Earth. After weeks of planning and organising, our year 5 and 6 students today ran an extraordinarily fun and successful fair. The day was a triumph with many positive comments from younger students and staff that today was "the best fair ever."

Students ran a variety of stalls from drinks, slushees, delicious homemade pizza, Nerf guns, water fun, cakes, lollies, apple bobbing, trash and treasure, ice creams, showbags, video gaming, hair and beauty, face painting, jumping castle and the hugely popular fairy floss!

Thanks must be given to all students, families and staff who made today such a success! The sheer volume of donations and money raised was staggering. Well done, Tighes Hill. What a fantastic school community!

Congratulations to our wonderful OC students who participated in the Newcastle University Science and Engineering Challenge Day at Kahibah Public school today. Students took part in a variety of challenging tasks including bridge building, mini catapult making and testing, electric circuit construction and building a working vehicle. Internal Review Process 2013 - extended until 6th August.

Thank you to our parents, teachers and executive for volunteering to meet as our Internal Review Team. The Tighes Hill focus will be Literacy and Community Engagement, two of our school priority areas for 2013. Completion of this process will be reflected in our School Planning for 2014 and be reported on through the Annual School Report.

It has been an exciting week at Tighes Hill with the arrival and installation of bag hooks outside our classrooms! Since the whole school refurbishment several years ago both staff and students have been wanting bag hooks for their belongings and also to keep our school looking tidy. A big thank you to Mr Burgess for installing these for us and to Mr Selwood for making bag hooks a reality!

Straw Tower Competition

Twelve students from Year 4 competed in a Science and Engineering challenge today at Newcastle Basketball Stadium. Gill, Zane, Brendan, Jaden, Nelson, Joe, Louis, Terrell, Rhiannon, Cala, Lilly, and Ameliah represented our school in the challenge by constructing three towers made out of drinking straws in order to see which one could hold the most weight. Though we were not victorious on the day, our teams had constructed some creative designs that were able to withhold the weights of 1kg, 1.4kg, and 1.6kg. The students had a great day, and took notes on possible designs that they could try for next time.

Thank you to parents and family members for your assistance and support on the day. We hope you are as proud of your children as we are, as they represented Tighes Hill fantastically.

Congratulations Debating Team!

Congratulations to our Stage 3 debating team who won the first round of the Equity Debating competition against Wallsend Public School. Our students did an amazing job debating the topic Antarctica Should Be Left for the Penguins. Both teams presented well researched speeches but it was Tighes Hill who were victorious in the end!

Tips to Help with Homework

Keep in touch with the teacher or teacher to be fully aware of the quantity and quality of homework expected.

Set a schedule with a beginning and end time.

Set time throughout the week to avoid the last minute rush.

Encourage your child to divide homework into ‘Work I can do myself' and ‘What I need help with'. This allows you to know when to be around and it builds responsibility and independence.

Provide a home study centre for your child with adequate light and few distractions.

Look over the homework when it is completed but do not correct the work. Seeing the pattern of errors is often helpful to the teacher

Supporting your child to develop confidence when reading,

Tighes Hill Public School is the hub school with 5 spoke schools – Mayfield East PS, Mayfield West Demonstration School, Carrington PS, Islington PS and West Wallsend PS. Carrington Kindergarten Visit

The kindergarten students from Carrington P.S. came to visit our kindergarten students as part of the "Places we know" HSIE topic. The students shared a book that they had made about their school, and discussed the similarities and differences between the two schools and classes. This was followed by a school tour, and some play time. Everyone had a great time and a return visit is being planned.

Maths group win at Thinkfest

5H6 (the Opportunity Class) participated in their "Thinkfest" challenge last week. Thinkfest challenges the children to write a script addressing key words, develop characters, learn parts, paint scenery and deliver slick, short plays for all of the OC classes in our district. Well done to all students especially the mathematics group, who won their category to bring Tighes Hill its first trophy!

Debaters win PSP final

On Tuesday (26/10) our Year 6 debating team won the final of the PSP debating competition. Around 30 schools participated in the competition, and we were against Gorokan PS in the final. The topic for the final was "Hollywood has a lot to answer for".
